A steady form for shared teaching
Shredded bark releases color steadily over a longer extraction than powder and is easier to strain from a group dye bath. That gives a facilitator time to demonstrate the process and gives first-time dyers a manageable material to handle.
A shared bath can work when participants are using compatible fibers and following the same process. If each person is testing a different fiber, mordant, or pH, separate small samples make comparisons clearer.
Before ordering, list the actual fiber amount for each participant and add the weights. Head count alone does not account for a mix of small swatches, scarves, and larger pieces.
Base the order on everyone’s dry fiber
Add together the dry weight of the fiber each participant will dye, then apply the weight-of-fiber (WOF) ratio you plan to test. For a transparent 75% WOF example, the workshop guide shows the calculation for 5, 10, and 20 participants and separates the calculated amount from package-size rounding.
Bath volume, pot capacity, test swatches, and repeat extractions are separate planning questions. If participants use independent baths, calculate from each project’s dry fiber and add those estimates; do not assume that the full group’s material fits one pot.

Shredded bark can be extracted more than once, but later baths are lighter. Treat a second or third extraction as a separate color option rather than counting it as an equal replacement for fresh bark.
If you plan to demonstrate several variables, set aside material for a small test before dividing the rest among the group. Keep the fiber, mordant, pH adjustment, and extraction notes with each sample so participants can compare what changed.
